Concept design

The first stage of the design process, where the foundations of any vessel are laid, is a concept design, it is also known as a preliminary ship design. Concept design of a ship  is a set of calculations for creating documentation that describes the necessary requirements for construction and ensures that the ship meets the needs of the client. As in any other construction issue, the construction of ships and river transport is impossible without a thorough study of the project, taking into account the purpose, local navigational features, the rules of design and construction, etc. The ship conceptual solutions preparation includes the following processes:
  • Designation of purpose or ship functionality.
  • Determination of the main dimensions in accordance with the rules and local restrictions in the intended areas of operation.
  • Determination of the basic features and ship concept design .
  • Preliminary calculations to ensure compliance with the Class rules and applicable Conventions.
  • Building of the ship in accordance with applicable technical regulations and safety standards.
  • Determination of the required propulsion package according to the characteristics, the required speed and power of the installed prime movers.
  • Selection of materials and equipment necessary to solve the set of tasks.
Feasibility study of of compliance the vessel to previous investment and operational expectations.

During the concept design development, all the nuances and peculiarities inherent to the type and purpose of the vessels must be taken into account.

The result of the preliminary or conceptual ship design is a preliminary project, which includes the next basic items:
  • specification
  • general arrangement and tank plan
  • basic calculations and ship design drawings
  • list and specifications of the main and specialized equipment of the ship
  • main performance indicators: draft marks, deadweight scale, capacity plan, speed – fuel consumption table, bollard pull (for tugs), free digging capacity (for floating cranes and trns-loaders), etc.
The volume of well-developed conceptual design should be sufficient for the following next steps:
  • feasibility study of the project
  • selection of shipyard and suppliers of basic equipment
  • determining the cost of ship building and the time of its construction
  • development of a shipbuilding contract and its financing scheme
  • development of pre-contractual specifications for the ship design contract
